Every behavior on the list can have explanations other than a developmental difference. Delayed speech can mean a child is bilingual and processing two languages. Sensory sensitivity can be temperament. Difficulty with transitions can be a developmental phase. The caregiver does not diagnose. What she does: observe carefully over time; document specific behaviors with date, context, and pattern; raise the pattern with the family, professionally and without diagnosis (“I’ve been noticing [specific behavior] for the past several weeks. Have you noticed anything similar? It might be worth mentioning to her pediatrician”); and continue to support the child and family with stable, attentive presence regardless of how the conversation unfolds.
