KNOW ON DAY ONE
The home address (write it down — you will blank under stress); the nearest cross street; where the first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, and any emergency medication are; the family’s emergency contacts and the pediatrician’s number; any escape plan and meeting point; and the location of the water, gas, and electrical shutoffs.
THE 911 CALL — WHAT TO SAY, IN ORDER
1. The emergency, in one line: “A 2-year-old is choking and not breathing.”
2. The exact address and nearest cross street.
3. Your phone number, in case the call drops.
4. The child’s age and what is happening now.
5. Do not hang up until the dispatcher tells you to — they will talk you through what to do.
